Why Students Don't Learn

Robert Duke gives a thought provoking talk on instruction, learning, and grading. Yes, it is over an hour long. Yes, it is directed towards higher education, but it is worth it. My favorite quote happens an hour and twelve minutes in, "All assessments are subjective...when we assign numbers to things we start to treat the numbers like numbers, instead of symbols that represent something else. So we average them together and do all the things you do with numbers and not really thinking of what that number is representative of."
